Toyota RAV4 is the world’s first compact crossover SUV, and its sales in Northern America began in 1996. Its success is based on the fact that it efficiently combines the high visibility, excellent seating position, safety features and the all-wheel drive of an SUV with the precise handling and better fuel efficiency of smaller, compact cars. Ever since its introduction, it came in two different wheelbase configurations with two or four doors, and the first generation even included the EV version which was a fully-electric plug-in vehicle produced in smaller numbers for fleet lease.
The RAV4 has paved the way for all of its competitors which include Nissan Rogue, Volkswagen Tiguan, Subaru Forester, Kia Sportage, Honda CR-V and Ford Escape. The RAV4 has the highest proportion of female drivers among all different makes and models sold in the United States.
Its high selling points include the traditional Toyota dependability, good build quality and the option of four-wheel drive.
The first generation featured the US-exclusive two-door soft top version. There was only one 2.0 liter engine available which could be mated to either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. Second generation brought an important engine upgrade to 2.4 liter displacement, along with numerous luxury and safety features, as well. The current line-up of models also features a powerful V6 engine, but it is not that fuel efficient.RAV4 has been involved in massive recalls including the floor mat entrapment recall and the infamous sticking accelerator pedal recall.
As of 2004, the IIHS gave the RAV4 an overall “good” rating for frontal offset and side impact crash tests. Among all trim levels available, the Special Edition model is most sought after, while the most popular colors among current and potential RAV4 owners include silver, black and white.
