Chevrolet Camaro (Chevy) Review
The all new 2017 Chevy Camaro offers across the board improvements in both design and performance when compared to its 2016 predecessor. Taking cues from the five generations before it, this sixth generation Camaro features the classic styling you’d expect from the franchise in a tighter, slimmer package. The 2016 Camaro is two inches shorter than its forerunner but is still pure muscle!
Despite this new Camaro’s compact size, it’s bursting with bold design. On the front end, Chevy kept the slim grille/lamp arrangement established in the 2016 model, with just a few tweaks. Overall the changes give the 2017 Camaro a more aggressive, road-hungry stance.
In profile, the 2017’s style has been greatly enhanced by a more radical fastback and beefier fenders, creating an aerodynamic appearance that’s hard to beat.
On the back end, the rear bumper has a new design, and newly redesigned taillights fit nicely above it. Toward the underside, the rear trim that encases the dual, or quad, tailpipes (SS model) is slimmer and rides lower, no longer cutting across the license plate. This gives the 2017 Camaro a sleeker, lower to the ground look and significantly changes the appearance of the rear end.
Inside the car, the interior has been completely redesigned but has remained true to its Camaro heritage. The stock model ships with traditional analog gauges, but now the option exists to upgrade to an 8″ HD panel which displays gauge data and more. A second 8″ screen acts as an infotainment center. These changes, as well as new button configurations and improved spacing of center console elements give the 2017 Camaro a roomier, more luxurious feel than its 2016 counterpart.
Under the hood, Chevy has added a four-cylinder, turbocharged engine capable of 275 to 650 hp horsepower. That’s enough to get the car from 0 to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds! Despite all this power, the new, 4-cylinder engine keeps the environment in mind, performing to the tune of up to 22 city / 31 highway. Not bad for a muscle car!
Two more engine options are available, the V-6 335 hp, and the V-8 455 hp monster! The new V-6 beats out both the Ford Mustang and the Dodge Challenger in horsepower to claim the title of most powerful in its class. It will move the Camaro from 0 to 60 in 5.2 seconds. The V-8, available on the SS, is more powerful still, gaining 29 hp on its predecessor. The difference is palpable and the V-8 gets the new Camaro to 60 mph in only 4.3 seconds! All engines come with the option of either a 6-speed manual transmission or an 8-speed automatic.
Lastly, the whole underside of the car has been overhauled. The new chassis is less heavy and means the 2016 Camaro is up to 390 pounds lighter than the 2016 model. This, combined with redesigned suspension results in a more responsive vehicle and an improved ride.
All in all, it’s hard to beat the newly redesigned Camaro. Chevy has worked hard to make numerous, significant improvements from the ground up, giving the 2017 Camaro all the power of a muscle car in a compact, lightweight, and stylish package.
