Can I buy and register a car in the US?
Yes, but the process depends on the type of title the vehicle has.
Clean Title Vehicles
If the vehicle has a clean title, you can typically purchase and register it in your state without additional steps. However, most states still require emissions or safety inspections before issuing a registration. Always confirm the requirements with your local DMV.
Salvage Title Vehicles
If the vehicle has a salvage title, you must complete a reconstruction process in your state to make the vehicle street legal before registration. This usually involves:
- Completing all required repairs
- Providing documentation such as photos and repair receipts
- Passing a state safety or rebuilt vehicle inspection
Once approved, the title may be rebranded as “Rebuilt” or “Reconstructed”, allowing for registration.
Note: Title branding terms such as Bill of Sale, Parts Only, No Title, or Certificate of Destruction may be subject to different rules in each state. Some titles may not be eligible for registration at all.
Important: Title and registration requirements vary by state. We recommend contacting your local DMV for detailed, state-specific regulations.
