What does it mean if I buy a car with a clean title, but it becomes a salvage title when I transfer it?

RideSafely advises that even if a vehicle is purchased with a clean title—for example, “MA Certificate of Title (Clean) (P) Pending for 30 days (may become salvage upon ownership transfer as per NMVTIS regulations)”—it might be reclassified as salvage when registered with your DMV, depending on its auction history and previous damage. This reclassification is determined by the DMV and not by RideSafely. Although reclassification to a salvage title is uncommon, it has occurred for some of our customers. You will still be able to register and use the vehicle on roads; however, it may carry a salvage title. Please be aware of this possibility when purchasing through salvage auctions.

If you have any questions about title reclassification, feel free to contact the RideSafely support team at (215) 289-0300. We’re here to assist you with your concerns.
