What does “NMVTIS” stand for?

NMVTIS, the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System, was implemented by the U.S. Department of Justice to protect consumers from fraud and unsafe vehicles and to prevent stolen vehicles from being resold. It is a crucial tool for states and law enforcement agencies in deterring title fraud and other related crimes.

All state DMVs must report data to NMVTIS and consult this database whenever a vehicle title is transferred. DMVs are also authorized to add branding to titles based on the information in NMVTIS records.

Please note that vehicles with clean titles sold through salvage auto auctions may be reclassified as salvage by the DMV based on NMVTIS data. Although this situation is uncommon, being aware of the possibility is essential. For more detailed information, visit www.vehiclehistory.gov .
