Ford Taurus is a highly successful sedan, first introduced by Ford in 1985. The Taurus is a very important vehicle for the entire American automotive industry as it brought numerous innovations and new features in its class. Even though it had the unusual front-wheel drive layout and a very aerodynamic design, it saved Ford from bankruptcy. It won Motor Trends’s Car of the Year award and it was also on the Car and Driver’s Ten Best list. The first four generations of Taurus featured a sedan and a station wagon option, but the latter was dropped in the latest generation.

The Taurus always came fitted with a V6 engine, while the first generation also featured a straight four-cylinder option as well. It was noted for its bold innovations in terms of interior design and features which were extremely user-friendly since the beginnings. The fourth generation of Taurus is the most popular one, especially the 2003 model year. It included four different trim levels, out of which the mid- priced SE was the best-selling one. The fourth generation did not include the high performance SHO trim level and it could only be purchased with an automatic transmission.

Pre-owned Tauruses are commonly sold for $3,000 to $14,000 at online car auction and the most popular exterior colors include silver, red and white. Taurus is usually chosen over its rivals because of its refinement, excellent exterior and interior design and an overall upscale feeling to it.

The most important competitors include Chevrolet Impala, Dodge Charger, Toyota Avalon and Chrysler 300.

Some owners reported that it is smaller on the inside than expected and that its handling is too tame, providing very little dynamic values. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Taurus an overall “good” rating for both frontal offset and side impact crash tests. The agency also gave it the Top Safety Pick award in 2011.
